Some places explain themselves the moment you sit down: a bar made for conversation, glasses filled without any pretension, and that clear feeling of “this is a place to enjoy.” That is Calcáreo, a wine bar in Bilbao that focuses on what really matters: soulful wines from small producers, carefully tended vineyards, and grapes that have had time to tell their story. And, as they themselves say, this is not a place to show off what you know: it is a place to share.

Who’s behind it

Calcáreo is the project of Sergio Mújico (sommelier) and María Mora (founder of La Manducateca). The idea is simple and very appealing: a welcoming place, “light and textured,” inspired by the limestone that gives it its name (porous, imperfect and beautiful), where everything feels authentic from the very first moment.

What you’ll find

At Calcáreo, the plan can be as simple as stopping by for a glass of wine or stretching the afternoon into an aperitif. The liquid side takes centre stage, but it never comes alone: the house pairs it with seriously good bites and a clear devotion to quality produce. The kitchen follows an honest approach: a simple menu, free from trends, designed to be enjoyed without complications. And at the table, or at the bar, the cheese boards play a starring role, with a selection linked to La Manducateca.

Tastings, gatherings and club

If you like to go one step further, Calcáreo is also a place where “things are going to happen.” They organise wine and cheese tastings for curious people who love to enjoy themselves: every month they open signature wines, serve artisan cheeses, and put together a francachela in their own way: learning, laughing and discovering without prejudice. They also host gatherings and events with presentations, surprise pairings and themed plans you will definitely want to hear about… or simply discover in the moment. For the more initiated, there is their Club Francachela, with private tastings, exclusive bottles and meetings with winemakers.

For gifting, or treating yourself, Calcáreo offers vouchers with experiences designed to be enjoyed as a couple or in a group: from an experience for two with a full menu and a bottle chosen according to your tastes, to more celebratory options for four in a private pairing format, as well as cheese-focused plans with a bottle included.

Where it is and how to book

Calcáreo is located at 14 Luis Briñas, Bilbao. If you are just going for “a little wine” and something to nibble on, they say you usually do not need a reservation; but if you would rather go for lunch or dinner, they recommend booking ahead. And one practical detail: they hold reservations for 15 minutes and, if your plans change, they appreciate a WhatsApp message.
