Who are we?

Founded in 1934, the British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for education and cultural relations. We have 8 centres in Spain and a presence in over 100 countries. We create opportunities and trust-based relationships internationally and work in different areas with the government, national and international organisations, companies and other bodies. Some of the factors that define us are our highly qualified teachers and our wide range of courses and resources for our students, which make us pioneers in English language teaching.

Our centre in Bilbao is located in the heart of Deusto. Come and visit us to find out more about our English courses for adults and for children and young people. EARLY YEARS

The early years of a child are key for acquiring a second language. At this age we focus on helping them acquire good pronunciation, build a solid foundation, and develop a positive attitude towards language learning. How do we do this? By using a British curriculum methodology for this stage, the Foundation Stage, which allows children to learn English through play-based activities focused on speaking and listening, where they are in constant contact with the language while having fun, always in English!

PRIMARY

In primary, our programme encourages students to express themselves in English in a safe and motivating environment, enhancing their communication skills and their confidence to foster a positive attitude towards learning.

We design activities that allow them to practise the grammar and vocabulary they are learning, so they understand the purpose of learning English, and use it with enthusiasm and motivation!

SECONDARY

In secondary, we use real-life topics that prepare our students for a globalised world. We focus on consolidating young people’s grammar knowledge while they practise their communication skills by developing group projects in which they feel like active members of a team.

We have a broad programme to develop the spoken part and we also prepare them to take official certifications such as Cambridge, IELTS or Aptis, which allow them to certify their English.

ADULTS

Knowing English in today’s globalised world opens doors in any field. Whether your goal is to access higher education, improve your professional situation, gain the necessary knowledge to be able to live abroad, or simply increase your level, we can help you.

We offer year-round courses, with the same teacher and classmates. Our classes are dynamic and interactive, focused on learning real English that allows you to communicate in a wide variety of contexts. We offer in-person and online courses, both continuous, with teacher support and assessment, and with the same group.

ENGLISH EXTRA | Much more than English classes

The best way to reinforce the English learned in class is to integrate it naturally into everyday and leisure activities. When you join the British Council, in addition to attending English classes, you can enjoy a wide variety of free services and activities that will support your academic and personal development. And, of course, when you enrol your child in a British Council centre, the whole family can enjoy a wide variety of complementary services and activities.

We also promote language learning outside the centre. We offer free storytelling sessions in different libraries and the Let’s go to the movies programme, where they take part in the viewing and discussion of films and documentaries, thanks to our collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum.

Partner schools in Bilbao

We teach English in schools in Bizkaia, offering quality English teaching to students aged 4 to 17, who can extend their academic training in English beyond school hours without leaving the centre.

Child protection

In addition to our commitment to quality English teaching, at the British Council we are committed to child protection, safeguarding the wellbeing of all our students. To achieve this, we have an internal policy that is mandatory for our staff, and we are members of the international association Keeping Children Safe.
