Hilma af Klint at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao: A Spiritual Journey into Abstraction

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents a new must-see exhibition dedicated to Hilma af Klint, open from October 18, 2024, to February 2, 2025. This exhibition offers a comprehensive view of the revolutionary Swedish artist’s work, now recognized as a pioneer of abstraction.

The exhibition features 110 of her essential Paintings for the Temple, along with other early works in a more conventional style, as well as her fascinating automatic drawings created with the spiritualist group The Five. Also on display are her later works, characterized by geometry, as well as watercolors and sketchbooks that showcase her evolution in her final period.

The exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao offers a unique opportunity to dive into the enigmatic world of Hilma af Klint, an artist ahead of her time whose legacy continues to reveal new layers of meaning and beauty. Don’t miss the chance to discover her spiritual and visual journey into the unknown.

A Misunderstood Pioneer

Though virtually unknown during her lifetime, Hilma af Klint has been reevaluated and recognized as one of the first artists to experiment with abstraction, years before figures like Kandinsky or Mondrian gained recognition for their own abstract works. Her art, imbued with symbolism and mysticism, defied the conventions of her time and served as a beacon of artistic and spiritual exploration.

Art and Spirituality

Af Klint’s art was not limited to the visible realm. It was profoundly influenced by her spiritual beliefs, particularly in spiritism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. For her, art was a means to connect with realities beyond the tangible, to explore the invisible and unknown through unique forms and colors.

Hidden Innovation

During her lifetime, Hilma af Klint did not share her abstract work with the public. In fact, she left instructions for these works to remain unexhibited until 20 years after her death, convinced that the world was not yet ready to understand her vision. This decision delayed recognition of her impact on the development of abstract art.

‘Paintings for the Temple’

Her most ambitious project, Paintings for the Temple, is a monumental series of 193 works that af Klint envisioned for display in a temple that was never built. These paintings offer a profound exploration of the duality between body and spirit and delve into themes such as the origin of life and the structure of the cosmos.

Art and Science

Af Klint lived during a period of major scientific discoveries and grew up in a family of cartographers. This influence is reflected in her work, which seeks to intertwine esoteric and rational knowledge. Her paintings aim to reveal the hidden order behind what we see, as if art could unlock the universe’s secrets.
